1800s: Immigrants Seek Hope in New York
Since the 1800s, countless immigrants have arrived in New York, seeking better opportunities for themselves and their families. The first sight for many was the Statue of Liberty, which emerged as a powerful symbol of hope and inspiration. This iconic landmark represents the promise of freedom and new beginnings, drawing individuals from diverse backgrounds to build their futures in America. New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE) has also become a similar symbol for thousands of immigrants from the past, present, and future who come to our doors to see our organization as a beacon of hope, freedom, and opportunities.
1999: NICE is Founded
In 1999, New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE) was established by active residents of Jackson Heights, Queens, in response to rising anti-immigrant sentiments. The founders envisioned a community where all people are welcomed, regardless of their race, nationality, or ethnicity. This mission aligns with the rich cultural tapestry of Jackson Heights, recognized as one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the world.
2012: NICE Aids in Sandy Recovery
After Hurricane Sandy struck in 2012, NICE members played a vital role in the recovery and reconstruction efforts across New York City. Many members arrived in disaster zones, first volunteering and later working in demolition and clean-up crews. Their contributions were crucial in restoring affected areas, showcasing the resilience, solidarity and dedication of the immigrant workforce in times of crisis.
2017: NICE Evolves into Worker Center
NICE transformed into the Queens Worker Center to empower and organize immigrant day laborers, domestic workers, low-wage workers, and newly arrived immigrants. This shift was driven by the alarming rise in deaths and accidents among Latino workers, particularly in the construction industry. Strategically located on Roosevelt Avenue near the 69th Street "Parada," where hundreds of workers gather daily, the center began offering critical workforce development programs. These include construction skills training, assistance with obtaining professional licenses, and education on worker rights. Through its holistic support services, NICE seeks to improve the lives of immigrant workers in New York City.
2020: NICE During COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly impacted New York with immigrants facing job losses, illness, and the tragic loss of life. NICE stepped up immediately to support its members, many of whom were essential workers in vulnerable positions. The organization provided resources, including food, health guidance, access to COVID vaccines, and economic relief, ensuring that immigrants had access to vital assistance during these dire times.
2022: NICE Assists Asylum Seekers
In 2022, NICE became a crucial resource for over 12,000 asylum seekers arriving in New York City. The organization provided essential services, including shelter, food, and guidance on starting new lives in the U.S. Through its extensive knowledge and community credibility, NICE was designated as a key Asylum Seeker Resource Navigation Center, offering support in multiple languages.
25 Years: NICE’s Transformative Journey
Over the past 25 years, NICE has evolved into more than just a destination; it has become a guiding torch for immigrants, with its flame and light serving as a source of inspiration and empowerment in building personal and professional lives in the United States. Drawing on its rich history and expertise, NICE provides a new framework that inspires, empowers, and organizes immigrants, regardless of their immigration status. As a beacon of hope, NICE introduces the Blueprint for the 21st Century, which outlines innovative initiatives to address the challenges immigrants face in their lives and work. A key component of this blueprint is the Pre-Apprenticeship for Life and Work program, designed to equip immigrants with the skills and support they need to thrive in today’s workforce. Through these efforts, NICE continues to embody its mission of empowerment and community support for all immigrants.
